Regular Dental Checkup – Preventive Dental Plan

PART TWO FROM THE THREE-PART SERIES ON PRACTICING PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY: WHY YOU NEED TO VISIT THE DENTIST REGULARLY AND WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT DURING A CHECK-UP.

Last month we started our three-part series on practicing preventive dentistry.

For part two of the three part series we are going to be talking about how regularly you should be visiting the dentist, and what you can expect during a check-up.

Part two – Why you need to be visiting the dentist regularly, and what you can expect during a regular check-up.

In part one of the series, we discussed the important role visiting the dentist plays in getting you on track to a healthy and happy smile.

If you read last months’ blog, we hope you made the decision to visit a dentist.

You might be wondering why visiting the dentist is so important, you might also be wondering how often you should really be attending a check-up.

The general rule of thumb is that you should be visiting the dentist twice a year. While this works well for some people, it shouldn’t be taken as a definitive rule.

People who place themselves at high risk of developing gum disease should be visiting the dentist more often than twice a year. People in this group include: smokers, pregnant women, people with gum disease and those who get regular cavities and plaque build up.

There are a number of other associated risk factors, so the twice a year rule is a good place to start for everyone.

It is recommended that even those with excellent dental hygiene get a check-up at least twice a year. It allows the dentist to inspect for issues that can’t necessarily be felt or seen.

 DENTAL VISITS AND PREVENTIVE EDUCATION

Visiting the dentist regularly while you are developing your own preventive health care plan is extremely beneficial. During an initial consultation, your dentist can assess your overall oral health, provide you with the best possible preventive plan and correct any flaws that you might have in your current oral maintenance plan.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR INITIAL CHECK-UP

During your initial check-up, your dentist will take the time to assess your current oral health, discuss any dental phobias or worries you might have and brief you on the check-up and what needs to be done.

There’s no reason to be scared or embarrassed. While dentists will recommend a visit every six months it’s important to understand they are human too. They understand that busy schedules can prevent someone from visiting the dentist as often as they should.

It’s important that you discuss any dental phobias or concerns with your dentist.

At Caroline Springs Dental we’ve been able to work with anxious patients, helping alleviate their fears and anxieties and change their perception about visiting the dentist.

After initial consult, you can expect a thorough assessment and clean. You will not be given any further extensive treatment. In the unlikely case that you might require some further treatment, the dentist will discuss the options with you.
